Photo-coupler (see above figure) consists of light emitting diode (LED) and light sensor, facing each other to transmit signals while insulating the electricity. Because of its noise immune property, photo-coupler has been used in high speed relay product and many other applications. The hardest part in designing photo-coupler is in sensor design. The sensor component is called “Photo Diode Array (PDA)” from its physical structure, and its design process involves a hard mathematical problem, as we see later. In practice, expert designers have been working on the design cases for “days”, in try-and-error methodologies. Now GemPDA can replace this task, with a uniquely tailored algorithm, which can solve a practical case in less than a second.

Such drastic speed up not only means the shortening the design time but also means the product quality improvement. That is because there are many design options in photo-coupler design, such as chip area shapes, light source types, anode/cathode types, etc. By drastic speed up, we can try more combinations of such options, which shall lead better product quality.

In the following, we will focus in single design iteration. We will explain the design problem to be solved, and show the tool performance with a comparison with manual design.
